Jon Stewart Offers Take on Verizon iPhone Deal

Jon Stewart Offers Take on Verizon iPhone Deal

Jon Stewart of The Daily Show offered his take on Tuesday’s Verizon Wireless iPhone announcement with typical hyperbole. “Freedom!” bellowed Stewart with arms outstretched. Stewart then quickly added, “Freedom to actually switch providers. Nothing more than that.”
It turns out that Stewart is part of the “iPhone community” and, like other iPhone users, laments AT&T’s sometimes-spotty service. “For the past three or four years, those of us in the iPhone community have sacrificed one thing for the ability to carry around every photo we’ve ever take or every song we’ve ever listened to or a compass….We have sacrificed the ability to make phone calls,” he said.
The segment also includes a remote from Daily Show senior correspondent John Oliver, who delivers a tortured, choppy interview over iChat that ends with a “Call Failed” message. “I’m sorry. I must have looked at a tunnel,” deadpans Oliver. Oliver’s segment then likens “VZ Day” to the liberation of Iraq and V-J Day. In a nice bit of corporate synergy, the online clip begins with a pre-roll ad for Verizon. Hmm.
