Tiger Woods To Hold Press Conference

Copyright 2009 Stuart Franklin / Getty Images
After being in hiding since Thanksgiving weekend, Tiger Woods will hold a press conference.
The pro golfer is scheduled to speak at the TPC Sawgrass, PGA Headquarters in Florida on Friday, February 19, at 11 a.m. EST. His agent tells "The Insider" that media access will be limited for the press conference.
Woods has been splashed all over the tabloids since a car accident occurred outside his Florida home in November. Following the accident, women started coming forward claiming to have had affairs with the famed golfer.

Tiger Woods to Hold Press Conference Friday

Embattled golf legend and record-setting cocktail waitress skirt chaser Tiger Woods is set to break his silence Friday at a press conference held by the PGA.
Tiger Woods will appear in person at 11 a.m. to issue a statement, but there will be no question and answer session, according to Darren Rovell of CNBC.
According to Tiger's agent, Mark Steinberg, he plans to apologize via prepared remarks for his behavior, while discussing his golf return and future plans.
He will be speaking with a small group of his friends and colleagues during the conference, reports say. No word on whether wife Elin will be present.

What will Tiger Woods say in his prepared statement?
Charlie Gasparino of Fox Business Network said "sponsors have been alerted by his reps that a public apology from Tiger Woods is imminent." He continues:
"We don't have this yet from Tiger's representatives, but I'm getting this from reliable sources that something is coming down the pike, and really soon."
What do you think will come of this? Is releasing a statement with no Q&A, and no interview, the right move for a man whose image has been shattered?
More details to come as the story develops ...

Historian Matt Hayday has some thoughts about international coverage of the Olympics in a blog post called “The Empires Snide Back“. You can read about one economist’s predictions re medal counts here.

One prediction market is suggesting that Germany will gain the largest number of medals.

The Olympics always offer a great set of human stories, especially as presented by NBC. Which Olympian will draw upon his or her heart-tugging personal story for that extra bit of adrenaline? Who shall choke and who shall be exalted with sponsorships? Who will overcome the obstacles of cold, wind, and pain to post a world-beating time? When you consider all the variables—the intense competition, the milliseconds that can separate third from fourth place, or the wild card of something like skier Lindsey Vonn's injury status—it would seem strange to predict medal performance based largely on economic factors.
But there's a robust, and surprisingly accurate prediction business among economists for the summer Olympics. (I covered these sets of predictions in 2008 and 2004.) For the Winter Olympics, which feature fewer competitors and many fewer events, the number-crunchers typically put down their keyboards and spreadsheets. All except economist Daniel Johnson, who seems uniquely qualified to prognosticate on such matters. He was born in Canada, teaches at Colorado College, and (as his C.V. notes) is way into curling.

Luger Who Died Video

Luger Who Died Video : The mourning father of Nodar Kumaritashvili, the Luger who died during a training run in Winter Olympics 2010 refused to watch the video of his dying son. Nodar Kumaritashvili, the luger who died during the training session and video was first uploaded on Youtube, which was removed by Google later.

Nodar’s father told in a TV interview that he can’t watch the video of his son’s death and he also criticized the Olympics officials for managing such a fast and killing track.
Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21 year old Luger from Georgia was ready for his practicing run on one of the fastest track of the world. Nodar didn’t had any idea about what was going to happen with him. Nodar set himself on the track, and there he went. Nodar completed his first lap comfortably, but he was in the course of speeding up, he reached the speed around 90 miles per hour and an uncovered steel poll was waiting for him around the corner. He lost control and fastest track in the world smashed him out with the speed of 90 miles and he hit the unpadded steel poll and died.
The killing sliding track of Winter Olympics was opened within 24 hours of the accident. It was a modified track with 5 miles lesser speed as compare to the track that killed Nodar.
Steel beams were covered by a wooden wall to avoid any further accidents. The beams were double padded, the track was also shortened and the turn where Nodar lost control and got killed was changed as well.
Well, all the precautionary measures taken but after killing one, the questions is why the management was unable to take same safety measures before, if they would have acted before, Nodar would be having a run as well.

John Mayer Playboy Interview Text

John Mayer Playboy Interview Text
February 12, 2010
By Admin

The singer John Mayer, @johncmayer on Twitter, put this 3-tweet post on his feed:

Re: using the ‘N word’ in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word. And it’s such a shame that I did because the point I was trying/ to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it/ because I realize that there’s no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged.
Mayer had the bad luck to have his interview in Playboy (warning: NSFW) reach a wide online audience during a snow day, when theTwitterati were generally housebound and looking for something to talk about. And talk folks did. Among the, uhm, bracingly frank statements he made, two are getting the most attention.

First, the “n-word.” From the interview:

I come on very strong…. That’s why black people love me….. Someone asked me the other day, “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a nigger pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass? But I said, “I can’t really have a hood pass. I’ve never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, ‘We’re full.’”

What caught my eye more was this one:

PLAYBOY: Do black women throw themselves at you?

MAYER: I don’t think I open myself to it. My dick is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a fuckin’ David Duke cock.

I’ve interviewed white supremacists, and the punchline to this joke falls… limp. I can roll with some pretty raw or adventurous humor, but this fratboyesque ahistorical cheap shot shows a profound misunderstanding of of white supremacy. Today’s white supremacists may decry “miscegenation,” but white supremacy resulted in an awful lot of race mixing — the forceable kind. Mayer’s father is Jewish and I wonder how much he knows or cares to about the violent history of white surpremacists towards Jews in the US and abroad.

But what I just said sounds too on-the-nose and preachy even for my own tastes. The reality is that it’s insulting to say black people love you and then profoundly misunderstand the difference between entitlement and humor. The entitlement goes beyond race to (again, boorish) comments about women by name and generally, and an obsession with generalizing his experiences at 32 as if every man shares the same perspective. (Note the phrase “that’s what you do….” If all men do, write in and let me know.):

….during sex, I’m just going to run a filmstrip. I’m still masturbating. That’s what you do when you’re 30, 31, 32. This is my problem now: Rather than meet somebody new, I would rather go home and replay the amazing experiences I’ve already had.

Hey, if that’s his thing, that’s his thing. But to overgeneralize it seems presumptuous and self-serving.

Using the “n-word” publicly often results in an apology, and this is no exception. I think his use of the word isn’t enlightened but it isn’t at all like, say, comedian Michael Richards’. But there’s a lot more going on in this interview around race and gender. I wondered, on Twitter, after doing my share of venting and listening, if we could redirect the conversation in a more positive direction. And the folks in my circle on Twitter really had some fabulous things to say. Among them:

From @bookofjames: The premise of your query doesn’t really get to the root of the problem. Racism cannot be effectively “treated” by triage.

I replied that was open to these random, Twitter-fied pop culture teachable moments, and gave my own two-tweet example:

I had an Asian-American friend who used a term about another Asian-American group. This was over 20 yrs ago in college./ I used term, and a white student schooled me that it was not okay to use. It was a learned moment. Stuck with me.

I hope the conversation was thought provoking for those of us sending in our short-form missives on Twitter. I also hope this entire experience has given Mayer some food for thought. I have compassion for the fact that celebrity makes every move of those who have it uber-public. Not one, but two of Mayer’s songs (including “My Stupid Mouth”) contain the line “I’m never speaking up again,” and now he may well feel like taking his own advice. But that would be a shame. Sometimes the only way to learn is by messing up, getting checked… and then learnin
to check yourself.

For the March 2010 issue of Play boy magazine, John Mayer did not hesitate to reveal information of his ex-girls, even gotten to a point of being racist.

Here is part of the interview text:

Magazine: You talked before about being an underdog. What were you like at 16?

MAYER: I wasn’t paying attention in school. I would come home and play guitar, playing for all the moments I had that day when I couldn’t feel alive. I visualized I was a superhero with an alter ego: “By day, a gawky, zitfaced 16-year-old boy.…” I would sleep with my guitar because I thought it would make me play better. I had a 100-disc CD player in the basement, and I would load it up with Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Kenny Burrell and Bill Evans and play CDs while I slept on the floor. Like somehow, by osmosis, the music was getting into me. It was the only way I could build enough armor to go back to school the next day.

Magazine: You’ve rarely talked about Aniston. She has rarely talked about you.

MAYER: We just have a regard for each other’s feelings that is pretty intense. It’s been a deep relationship, and it’s no longer taking place at all. Have you ever loved somebody, loved her completely, but had to end the relationship for life reasons?

PLAYBOY: Do black women throw themselves at you?

MAYER: I don’t think I open myself to it. My d*ck is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a f**kin’ David Duke c*ck. I’m going to start dating separately from my d*ck.

Alec Baldwin Hospitalized

Reports wrong Alec Baldwin rushed to hospital for “alcohol or drug abuse”

According to the website of the local Fox station in New York, after Alec Baldwin’s daughter Ireland called 911, at 12:13 a.m. paramedics responded and transported the “30 Rock” star to Lenox Hill hospital in New York “with effects of possible alcohol or drug abuse.”
NOT true.
While it is accurate that his daughter dialed 911, and that he willingly went to the hospital, as Baldwin’s rep explained in a statement, “This was a misunderstanding on one person’s part. Alec was quickly released from the hosptial, he’s completely fine and will be at work today.”
When Gossip Cop followed up with his rep, Baldwin’s spokesman reiterated, “Absolutely no drugs or alcohol.”
The 911 call followed an argument with Baldwin’s daughter, for whom who you’ll recall the Emmy winner had left a stinging voicemail for a few years ago, and for which he has subsequently apologized profusely, citing in part his bitter custody battle with ex-wife Kim Basinger.
According to other reports, Ireland told 911 that Baldwin had threatened to take pills, but a source close to the actor confirms to Gossip Cop that, too, is “completely false.”
Gossip Cop will update as more details emerge.

Alec Baldwin in Hospital: Alec Baldwin 911 Call

A shocking newsbreak just came in after reports have it that Alec Baldwin has been sent to the hospital. After a distressful 911 call, actor Alec Baldwin is not in the hospital. Before we go through with what happened with the actor, first, let’s do a background check on him. Alec Baldwin is an American film and television actor who has appeared in numerous Hollywood film like Beetlejuice, The Hunt for Red October which were shown in the 1980’s, to the The Aviator and The Departed in the 2000’s. A 911 call was taken from Alec Baldwin’s home in West Side Manhattan apartment.

According to WNBC in New York, Alec Baldwin was sent to New York Hospital but was later on released early morning. Reports had it that his daughter called 911 saying Alec Baldwin was unresponsive. After paramedics arrived at his apartment, Baldwin was taken to Lennox Hill Hospital and was released after an hour. He was thought to have had or may have some subscription pill overdose. Final reports from his publicist said thatAlec Baldwin being hospitalized was just a misunderstanding and that he will be back tomorrow for work. Check out more details on this Alec Baldwin in Hospital: Alec Baldwin 911 Call issue below.

Alec Baldwin Briefly Hospitalized Over Daughter's Concerns -- Report

By PopEater Staff  Posted Feb 11th 2010 07:01AM

'30 Rock' actor Alec Baldwin was rushed to a New York City hospital overnight after his daughter thought he was being unresponsive, according to various reports. A law enforcement official told the Associated Press that Baldwin and 14-year-old Ireland had been arguing, and she told 911 that he had threatened to take pills. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity.

According to various accounts, when police and medics arrived at his apartment, Baldwin was awake and agreed to be taken to the hospital for examination. He was driven to Lennox Hill Hospital, where he was treated and released an hour later.
Baldwin's publicist issued a statement calling the whole thing "a misunderstanding on one person's part." The statement said Baldwin is "completely fine and will be at work" on Thursday.

The Emmy-winning actor has no known history of illness. Baldwin's relationship with daughter Ireland was the source of a 2008 scandal involving phone messages in which he berated her as a "pig."

The story was first reported by NBC New York.

Illinois Earthquake Hits, 3.8

Illinois was hit by a 4.3 magnitude earthquake today just south of Gilberts. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake hit at approximately 3:59:33am.
The quake was said to be experience as far as Wisconsin and Tennessee. However I live just a few hours from the epicenter and I felt nothing, not even a tiny tremor. Although I could probably sleep through a war.
According to reports coming out of DeKalb and Kane Counties  (the closest counties to the epicenter of the quake) books fell off  shelves in some homes and rattled walls.

Illinois Earthquake Update

So, when I woke up and saw that the top story on the news was the earthquake outside of Chicago, of course I called Mom and Dad to make sure they were all right.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, we didn’t really get any of the ‘blizzard’.”
“What are you talking about? You had a blizzard.”
“What are you talking about?”
“The earthquake.”
“What earthquake?”
“The earthquake y’all had last night.”
“Betsy, I just turned the news off after the top stories and they didn’t mention an earthquake. I’ll go look for some damage if you want, but it doesn’t even look like the cat’s rattled.”
(Though I have met their cat and I think it always seems a little rattled.)
So, there you go.

According to USGS, “a magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 60 miles from where it occurred, and it infrequently causes damage near its source. A magnitude 5.5 eastern U.S.earthquake usually can be felt as far as 300 miles from where it occurred, and sometimes causes damage as far away as 25 miles.”
Magnitude 4 is now trending at the number 3 spot and will rise to number 1 in a short while as news of the earthquake spreads.
Several Illinois residents who live near Chicago were woken up a little early on Wednesday morning as a small Earthquake shook the area.  No major damage has been reported.
An early morning earthquake rattled northern Illinois on Wednesday, shaking an area about 50 miles west-northwest of downtown Chicago, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The magnitude 4.3 quake hit just before 4 a.m. CT (5 a.m. ET), with an epicenter about 3 miles underground. The USGS pinpointed the quake between the towns of Virgil and Sycamore.
The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the 4.3-magnitude earthquake hit near the town of Virgil, about 50 miles northwest of Chicago, at  around 4 a.m. Wednesday. The vibrations could evidently be felt in Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana and Michigan.
Many are unaware, but there’s a nasty fault line through Illinois called the New Madrid fault, and while it’s too early to tell where it originated, the early assumption is that is the case, so this isn’t the first time, and won’t be the lastearthquake in Illinois.
The epicenter was in the city where the University of Northern Illinois is located, in De Kalb County, Illinois.

A mild earthquake shook northern Illinois this morning.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 3.8-magnitude quake at 3:59:33 a.m. centered in a farm field on Plank Road near Hampshire and 3.1 miles underground. Initially, it had reported the magnitude as 4.3 with an epicenter about 5.5 miles east of Sycamore.
The quake was felt over a wide area -- from Wisconsin to Tennessee -- but there were no reports of any damage so far, according to the Kane County and DeKalb County sheriff's departments, which are closest to the epicenter.
"We got hundreds of calls," said DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott. "But we have no reports of damage or injuries."
The magnitude and epicenter were revised after the U.S. Geological Survey studied the "wave forms" from the quake, said Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist with the geological survey in Golden, Colo.
"The information was better understood," she said.

The nature of the fault activity that caused the quake was unclear, Vaughn said. Past quakes that have affected southern Illinois have been in the Wabash Valley or New Madrid seismic zones.
The fault systems in northern Illinois are not as well understood as those in other regions where earthquakes are more common, and more investigation will be needed to determine the cause of this morning's temblor, Vaughan said.
A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near downstate West Salem on April 18, 2008. That quake was the worst to hit Illinois since 1968.
By contrast, the earthquake that leveled Haiti on Jan. 12 registered 7.0 on the Richter Scale, meaning it was about 1,600 times the magnitude of the one this morning. Many of the numerous aftershocks to hit the island were approximately the same magnitude as the quake that hit near Sycamore today.

Reports of tremors came in from Villa Park, Western Springs, Minooka, Batavia, Naperville, Elgin, Oak Lawn, Des Plaines and even Crown Point, Ind. In Chicago, reports came from the Northwest Side and Logan Square. The USGS has received thousands of reports from as far north as Madison, Wis., and as far south as Bourbonnais.
_quake612.jpgEmma Stewart, 8, goes to check on her 23 chickens in Maple Park after the earthquake. (Stacey Wescott / Tribune)
"The whole house shook," said Walter Mockus of St. Charles. "The chimes that hang were all ringing. It was so loud, I thought a plane had gone down."
"It was 4:02 a.m. and I was in bed and felt the whole house shaking," said Bob Bulmash of Warrenville. "But nothing fell down. It lasted about 3 to 5 seconds."
In Naperville, Julie Hannon said the quake shook her out of a sound sleep.

"When you feel an earthquake, it makes you wake up right away," said Hannon, who said she had experienced several quakes when she lived in Japan. "You could feel a shaking and you could hear a rumbling."
"I heard the plates I didn't wash from dinner rattle," said Alice Fabbre of Joliet. "The house shook, but it was very short. At first, I thought it was a snow plow going by."

"It shook me out bed. I was was sleeping and the whole bed was shaking, it was that violent," said Rex Covington, who lives in Plato Center Township, about five miles west of Elgin. He estimated the tremor lasted 5 or 6 seconds.
"When I called 911, she said they felt the shock too and said their whole building in Geneva shook."
In Oak Lawn, Ron Cerevic, who lives on the second floor of an apartment building, said it felt "like someone hit the side of the building."
"The glass shower door shook violently," said Tracey Fry of Carol Stream. "It sounded like someone was in the shower pounding on the door."
