Gerry Ryan RIP

Gerry Ryan RIP
April 30, 2010 @ 3:22 pm | by Jim Carroll

2fm broadcaster Gerry Ryan was found dead at his home in Dublin this morning. He was 53 years of age.

Apr 30th, 2010 | By Bock | Category: Media
Gerry Ryan has died in his apartment.
I have no further details at the moment, but the news report said that foul play is not suspected.  Although I didn’t particularly like him, I hope that isn’t code for something more sinister.

We have just learned at 2pm today that legendary Irish broadcaster Gerry Ryan has been found dead in his Leeson Street apartment from a suspected heart attack after he failed to show up for his radio show this morning.

Ryan (53) failed to show up this morning for the 2fm radio show he has presented since 1988. The cause of death is unknown at present. Gardaí are investigating but foul play is not suspected. Ryan was consistently one of RTÉ’s most popular presenters, and will be a massive loss to Irish Radio.

All the staff at Good Seed PR wish to extend their condolences to his family and friends and to all his faithful listeners and to the staff in RTE on this very sad time.

How awfully tragic and sad.

In our prayers Gerry,

All the gang in GSPR xxxx

Murdered Trans-teen Vindicated

The 2002 Araujo case drew national attention to the plight of transgender people in the United States, especially transgender people of color.  Araujo, born biologically male and originally known as Eddie, had transitioned to being female by the time of the assault.  After she died, her mother legally changed her name to Gwen as a sign of love and respect.  Her killers, who knew her as “Lida” had known her for months, and Gwen believed they were fast friends.  Both Merel and Magidson had sex with Araujo orally and anally.  According to their defense, she had not revealed her biological identity to them.  When her biological maleness was discovered, the defense went on to contend, the men attacked Araujo “in the heat of the moment,” and therefore deserved convictions for a lesser charge of manslaughter instead of murder.  The prosecution successfully argued against this version of the “trans-panic defense,” and secured the  murder convictions against them.  Two other defendants in the case, Jaron Nabors and Jason Cazares pled guilty to manslaughter and were sentenced to 11 and 6 years respectively.  They have not sought to challenge their convictions.
The Araujo case sharpened the national debate on the trans-panic defense.  The outcome of the 2002 trial went a long way toward refuting the once widely held notion that trans people somehow brought on attacks against themselves.  As Masen Davis, executive director of the Transgender Law Center noted to reporters, the ruling of the court of appeal definitively rejected the claim that the murder of a young woman like Gwen should be reduced to a lesser charge just because she was transgender.  “We are thankful that the Court of Appeal saw through this blatant prejudice, and upheld the convictions of Gwen’s killers,” she said.

Kentucky Derby 2010

Kentucky Derby 2010 Horses Contenders

So, you wanna make some cash on the Kentucky Derby, but you don't know much about betting the ponies? Don't worry, And Down The Stretch They Come editor Matt Gardner is here to help with this handy gambling guide.

Apr 29, 2010 - With a 20-horse field and a seemingly never-ending supply of wagering options, deciding how to bet the 2010 Kentucky Derby can be a daunting task. Before any player decides to invest funds into a wager they should always have a grasp as to what kind of return they might get. Fortunately, the Will Pays can guide us for Exacta and Daily Double wagering but we have to use historical figures as our guide for other pools.

Almost all of the "High" payouts in the exotics come from the Giacomo year of 2005. Not only did 50/1 Giacomo win the Derby, but long shot Closing Argument was second, keying boxcar payouts across the board. Last year's winner, Mine That Bird, paid more for a $2 Win bet, but the exotics were decidedly lower than the Giacomo year.

After going through the numbers of the last 10 years, I sketched out several observations and trends:

The Pick 6: While offering all the temptations of fame and glory, it's a bad bet on Derby day simply for the fact that more often than not it doesn't even hit. Seven times in the last 10 years it's paid only a consolation 5-of-6 (2000, 2002-2005, 2008-2009). When you factor in what it costs to play a Pick 6 ticket that has an even minimal chance of success, the value just doesn't seem to be there. If you're a high bankroll player, then it's not an issue. But the medium to small bankroll player would be wise to avoid this pool.

The Pick 4: This bet is clearly where it's at on Derby day. A solid $7k median payout over 10 years, with the lowest payout the $767.40 it paid the year Barbaro won the Derby (ironically, the lowest paying Pick 4 was the year that I had a piece of it). A $767 Pick 4 isn't great, but if you are playing tickets in the $75 - $125 range you're getting a decent 6/1 odds on your payout. And that's if you hit the low end. If you hit the median with that size of a ticket you're getting anywhere from 57/1 to 95/1 on your return. That's good value, if you can hit it.

The Pick 3: This bet doesn't pay as well as the Pick 4 but it's a nice compromise for players that want to control costs but still have a shot at a decent pay day if some large prices come in. The median payout of $720 is a very nice sum for a Pick 3 play, especially if you are able to hit it multiple times.

Daily Double: These payouts aren't bad, but I find that the big Derby field and the amount of spreading you usually have to do severely cut into your winnings. Say you want to play a straight 2 x 4 (or 1x5, or whatever you choose to do) Daily Double to the Derby. That's a $16 bet that pays and median of $82 for a return of about 5/1, and that's by playing to only four of the twenty Derby horses. Not a great return on investment. The best way to play a DD in the Derby is to cold punch it (a straight one horse by horse ticket) for $10 or $20 and get it multiple times. If you hit it, you'll be sitting pretty...but that goes without saying.

Exactas: The best way to really make money in the Derby is to decide what you like and then bet it strong. Sure, have savers on a couple of your next best bets, but players should win and lose with their top choices. Don't try and cover everything, at least not with the majority of your bankroll.

On Derby day, I try to allocate about 80 to 85% of my bankroll to my prime plays and the rest to the action bets. That means 85% of my bankroll is dedicated to the one or two horses that I like the best. I'll play a win bet, an exacta, and either a tri or a super, depending if I have a couple of long shots that I love in the back of the tickets.

Here's an example of the various ways to play an Exacta bet this Saturday. Let's say you really like Sidney's Candy (#20) and Ice Box (#2); you could play those two horses straight up in an exacta box, as illustrated below (this is an example, not a suggested wager):

$2 Exacta Box: 2-20 = $4

The above bet would cost $4 since you have two $2 bets working. Of course, just a two horse exacta box isn't going to give you much coverage in a twenty horse field. Let's say that you also liked Dublin (#17), Noble's Promise (#3), and Stately Victor (#6), and you want to play an exacta will all of those horses. You could just play an exacta box bet where you would have every one of the combinations involving those five horses. That bet is illustrated below:

$2 Exacta Box: 2-3-6-17-20 = $40

Now you've got 20 $2 bets working for you, but your ticket cost is now $40. If the exacta were to pay a couple hundred dollars you're getting 5/1 or better. Not bad, but not great.

There's another way to play this exacta that reduces cost but helps to maximize the return, and that's by identifying a couple of horses that you like to win with the others as horses for the 2nd spot only. Using the same scenario, let's say you really like Sidney's Candy and Ice Box to win, and the other three horses for second. We could play an Exacta Part Wheel in the following manner:

$2 Exacta Part Wheel: 2-20 with 2-3-6-17-20 = $16

Now you've got eight different combinations. You cash your ticket if the 2 or the 20 win and any of your horses place second. You've also just reduced the total cost of your ticket by over half.

The final way to play this these horses in an exacta is using a structured ticket and it works like this: let's say that in the above situation you really like Ice Box to win, in fact, you like him to three times as much as you like Sidney's Candy. In that situation, you could play one ticket using Ice Box on top for more money. Here's how that would work:

$6 Exacta Part Wheel: 2 with 3-6-17-20 = $24
$2 Exacta Part Wheel: 20 with 2-3-6-17 = $8

Total bets: $32

In this situation, if you hit the Ice Box ticket, you'll have the winning combination 3x, meaning you multiple whatever $2 payout the track displays by three, and you'd still have a single play to the Sidney's Candy combination. If you're right about Ice Box you'll be rewarded with and even larger payout.

Trifectas and Superfectas: The same principles apply to the tris and supers as the exacta expect that these bets can get very expensive, very quickly, especially if you are boxing your bets. The best way to keep the cost down is to identify key horses and play part wheel tickets, as opposed to boxing everything. If you have the bankroll to box them all or you just want to play a small straight ticket, then let it roll. But if you're looking to keep costs contained or you want to spread out for more coverage, then it makes more sense to key a horse or two on top and spread in the back half.

Now that you know how to bet the Derby, let's all go get rich and drink Juleps.

If you’re figuring your bets, be aware that jockey Calvin Borel is riding Super Saver this year. Borel has won two Derby races, and kicked ass this weekend at Churchill Downs.
“Super Saver is a lot like this one (Hurricane Ike); he tries every time,” said Borel. “As a jockey, all you can do is do your best, and as a horse, all you can ask is that they do their best. When that happens, you’ve got a chance.”
Unfortunately for Derby fans and bettors alike, the race’s favorite, Eskendereya, was scratched due to inflammation in the left front leg. Eskendereya’s injury knocked the arguable favorite out of the 136th Derby, but the race goes on with these likely contenders.
“Just like Strike the Gold, he’s a late-developing horse,” Zito said. “He ran in Florida … ran the right races. Of course, Strike the Gold finished second in the Florida Derby and this horse won.
“I like his chances, I really do. … It’s good to have a horse this week training the way he does.”
The prices for our handicapping picks are extremely reasonable and the performance of our selections will blow you (and the competition) away. Currently, selections for a full 10-race card only cost $7.50! In addition, if racing is in progress, you only pay for the picks of the remaining races ($0.75 a race)! Special events may be priced differently.
The best and the top most contenders of kentucky Derby list as follows: American Lion, Awesome Act, Conveyance, Dean’s Kitten, Discreetly Mine, Dublin, Endorsement, Eskendereya,Homeboykris, Ice Box, Interactif, Jackson Bend, Line of David, Lookin at Lucky,Make Music For Me, Mission Ipazible, Noble’s Promise, Paddy O’Prado, Rule, Setsuko,Sidney’s Candy,Stately Victor and Super Saver.

Sandra Bullock Divorcing Jesse James and Adopting Baby Boy

Website: Bullock is divorcing James, adopting baby
NEW YORKSandra Bullock has filed for divorce from her husband, Jesse James, and is adopting a baby boy as a single parent, a story posted Wednesday on People magazine’s website.
“Yes, I have filed for divorce,” the 45-year-old Oscar-winning actress said in an interview with People. “I’m sad and I am scared.”

Bullock and James, 41, began the adoption process four years ago, the report said, and brought 3 1/2-month-old Louis Bardo Bullock home in January but decided to keep the news to themselves until after the Academy Awards.
In the interview, Bullock said she is savoring her new maternal status.
“You wake up, you feed, you burp, you play, you do laundry,” she said. “I’m still in that stage where I’m just amazed with him and at life.”
“All I said when I met him was, ‘Oh, there you are.’ It was like he had always been a part of our lives.”
The baby, called Louie, is named after jazz great Louis Armstrong, who had particularly touched her with his signature song, “What a Wonderful World,” said Bullock. The child was born in New Orleans, a city where Bullock and James had both spent time after Katrina.
Bullock said she got the call that a baby might be available for adoption during what she described as “the media craziness of the awards season.”
Deciding to shield Louis from that turmoil, she kept his existence a secret from all but a few trusted associates and loved ones. Her life (and his) became an ongoing process of secrecy and diversion.
“Just the doctors’ visits were filled with decoys and dark cars,” she said. “People that I had worked with for years couldn’t understand why I wouldn’t let them into my house for (Oscar ceremony gown) fittings.”
James and Bullock separated in March after five years of marriage, following reports that James had been unfaithful.
Bullock won the Oscar for best actress for her role in the blockbuster hit “The Blind Side,” on March 7. Within days of her win, the cheating allegations became public and Bullock went into seclusion.
The motorcycle mogul publicly apologized to Bullock and his children, Sunny, 6; Jesse Jr., 12; and Chandler, 15. He recently returnedhome after a 30-day stay in a treatment facility where he sought help for “personal issues,” the People story said.
When asked about whether James had cheated, Bullock said she “had no idea about anything.”
“I did the only thing I could do, and that was to pack enough clothes to live on, get all of Louis’ things and get out of town. My main concern was Louis.”

When asked whether James will have any formal parenting role, she replied: “I will be adopting as a single parent. Anything else will be taken day by day.”
Of her relationship with James’ three children, Bullock said, “I don’t want to know what life is like without those kids. … Whatever we need to do, in the healthiest way, we are going to be co-parenting.”
Looking ahead to life without James, Bullock said, “I really don’t know how our paths will intersect in the future, but the father I have known Jesse to be with all the kids is one that I hope Louis can experience one day, no matter how Jesse and I go on with our lives.”
News of the adoption quickly seized the attention of fans of Bullock and fellow celebrities alike.
On Wednesday morning’s “Live! With Regis and Kelly,” host Regis Philbin held up a copy of People magazine, which shows Bullock smiling at her baby son as she holds him aloft.
“It’s not very easy to adopt a baby,” Philbin said.
He’s cute, chirped co-host Kelly Ripa.
“Lucky little guy, too,” said Philbin.
And on Twitter, early entries saluted the new mother: “Sandra Bullock is a true role model,” posted judyavanness. “True grace under pressure.”
“Good for Sandy! Soo cute! The best love is from your child!” declared LScott17.

Ryan Howard

Posted by Pat Gallen, Mon, April 26, 2010 04:06 PM

By now you know; Ryan Howard will be here for a long, long time. Howard and the PPhillies have come to an agreement on a five-year, $125 million contract extension that could go to six years. It also includes a limited no-trade clause.

With this contract, The Phillies payroll will undoubtedly swell past the $140 million plateau that had been deemed the limit by the brass. Many of the Phillies Nation writers are on different sides of the fence regarding this news, so our opinions will be up soon. We want to know what you think about this massive deal?

Ryan Howard Signs Five-Year Extension
By Tim Dierkes [April 26, 2010 at 1:08pm CST]

Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard signed a five-year, $125MM extension, according to CSN's Jim Salisbury. The deal includes a $23MM option for 2017 with a $10MM buyout. Howard is currently under contract through 2011, so the extension runs from 2012 through 2016. AOL FanHouse's Ed Price tweets the yearly salaries, noting that there is a limited no-trade clause. Hot stove junkies won't be seeing Howard join Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder, and Adrian Gonzalez in the 2012 free agent class.

Howard is in his age 30 season, so the contract begins with his age 32 season. The length makes this an unnecessary risk, and at $25MM a year the Phillies didn't get a discount for taking the gamble and locking him up two years before free agency. Tip of the cap to agent Casey Close, who negotiated the deal.

Back in '08 Howard set a first-time arbitration record with a $10MM salary. A year later he signed a three-year, $54MM extension to buy out his remaining arbitration years. The Phillies clearly like to lock up their guys.

Brett Michaels Condition - Bret Michaels remains in intensive care,Bret Michaels remains in intensive care after suffering a brain hemorrhage, but further testing is scheduled to help locate the source of the bleeding. The 47-year-old rocker's website says a report from doctors is expected this week. It didn't say where Michaels is hospitalized.

The post adds: "Please remember Bret is, and always has been, a fighter and survivor and is under the best medical care possible."
Michaels' New York-based publicist, Joann Mignano, confirmed Friday a report on People magazine's website that said the former Poison frontman was rushed to intensive care late Thursday after a severe headache. The report said doctors discovered bleeding at the base of his brain stem.

He is a contestant on NBC's "The Celebrity Apprentice."

Bret Michaels remains in critical condition after suffering a brain hemorrhage that has confined him to the Intensive Care Unit since Thursday. According to a Sunday update on the Poison frontman's official site, Michaels is under 24-hour medical supervision. At the moment, the 47-year-old Celebrity Apprentice star is undergoing tests to locate the source of the bleeding. Once that happens, doctors can take the next step and perform an operation.

Although Michaels' condition is extremely serious, friends say that the jovial rocker is still acting like himself. TMZ reported on Friday that Michaels is "awake, in good spirits and talking," according to his band mates and Rock of Love pals (including ex-girlfriend Ambre Lake). On Saturday, Michaels' father Wally Sychak spoke to RadarOnline, saying that he'd spoken to Bret that morning, and although the musician was under sedation, "he sounded upbeat and positive... He sounded like my son."

Sychak also confirmed what many had suspected: the brain hemorrhage is most likely related to Michaels' type 1 diabetes (as was his recent emergency appendectomy). The "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" singer has been very open about his diabetes, and has raised $100,00 for the American Diabetes Association so far on Celebrity Apprentice.
