126 workers were on the Deep Water Horizon oil rig when the explosion happened around 10 p.m. Tuesday, 52 miles southeast of Venice, La. Most of the people on the oil rig were being evacuated to shore by the US Coast Guard.
But at least 12 workers are missing and 8 dangerously injured after an explosion on a BP Oil Rig in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana.
Authorities were searching for missing workers early Wednesday who evacuated after an explosion at an oil drilling platform off the coast of Louisiana.
Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Mike O’Berry said that the BP Oil Rig explosion happened around 10 p.m. Tuesday, 52 miles southeast of Venice, La., while 126 workers were aboard the platform.
Coast Guard continues to search the waters in the Gulf of Mexico for others in the water near the rig with helicopters and boats.
Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Mike O’Berry also said that the four helicopters, four Coast Guard boats and a plane were helping search for some workers who were unaccounted for Wednesday.
No deaths were reported, but Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Mike O’Berry said there were some injuries. He did not know how many.
TV news reports said the Deep Water Horizon oil rig, owned by Transocean (NYSE: RIG) and operated by BP (NYSE:BP), was on fire after the explosion late Tuesday evening April 20 2010.
At the same time, fire boats were still battling the fire at the oil platform, called Deep Water Horizon.
“It’s burning pretty good and there’s no estimate on when the fire will be put out,” O’Berry said.
