Reservations For Texas Trade Up Appliance Rebate Program Now Being Accepted

Katy area residents have begun reserving appliance rebates under the Texas Trade Up Appliance Rebate program.

Much like the Cash for Clunkers program to take polluting cars off the road, the Texas Trade Up Appliance Rebate Program is offering Texas residents rebates to replace energy-hungry appliances with more efficient models.

Those interested in participating in the program must first reserve their appliance rebate. The program began accepting reservations this week for Energy Star-qualified appliances to be purchased April 16-25.

The program also offers an additional rebate for the proper recycling and disposal of the older appliances.

Katy State Rep. Bill Callegari urged area residents to take full advantage of the unique opportunity.

“This is a limited-time opportunity for families to save money and conserve energy while replacing their old appliances with more energy efficient ones,” Callegari said. “The short term and long term savings available to everyone who participates are hard to ignore.”

Rebate reservations will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each household may qualify for up to two different appliance rebates.

The rebates apply to eligible appliances only, including Energy Star-qualified refrigerators, clothes washers, central air conditioners, water heaters and air source heat pumps. Televisions, computers, stereos and clothes dryers do not qualify for a rebate.

Once an individual has reserved their rebate, they may purchase an eligible Energy Star-rated appliance in-store at a Texas retailer April 16-25. The rebate does not apply to appliances purchased on-line.

Consumers will then have 60 days from the day that they reserved their rebate to install the appliance and submit required paperwork.

The Texas Trade Up Appliance Rebate Program also offers rebates of $75 for recycling old appliances that are replaced by new ones purchased through the program. For example, if a household purchases a new refrigerator, then it may only receive a recycling rebate for its old functioning refrigerator upon providing proof of recycling. Although the program offers rebates for replacing old appliances, it does not require that they be recycled.

The program offers significant savings for purchasing energy efficient appliances. A family purchasing an Energy Star-qualified 14.5 or greater cubic foot refrigerator may receive $315 in rebates if they recycle their old unit. Purchasing a 5.0 gallon per cycle dishwasher while recycling an older dishwasher could qualify for a $215 rebate.

Callegari stressed the amount of money available for the rebates is limited.

“I encourage all interested households to participate as soon as possible. I strongly encourage any household that is interested in participating in this program to do their own research to find out how this program may better serve their needs,” he said.

Texas received more than $23 million from the US Department of Energy to establish the Texas Trade Up Appliance Rebate Program. The program will be administered by the State Energy Conservation Office within the Office of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
